Humphreys Campaign Moves Backwards

Kirk Humphreys must be asking himself why he spent so much of his time and money orchestrating his candidacy for U.S. Senator. Humphreys did just about everything he could possibly do to guarantee his primary victory. He got out early and secured endorsements from Senator Jim Inhofe, J.C. Watts, U.S. Congressman Tom Cole, U.S. Congressman John Sullivan, Tulsa Mayor Bill Lafortune, Steve Largent (who later disavowed the endorsement for personal reasons. He's a friend of Tom Coburn.) Don Nickles (According to Jim Inhofe in Humphreys advertisement.) and Henry Bellmon (who also endorsed Bob Anthony.) These are not all of his endorsements but probably the most notable of them.

With all of this fire power, why hasn't Humphreys rocketed to the top of the polls? Jim Inhofe would have us believe that Bob Anthony is to blame for Humphreys demise. Kirk Humphreys blames "outside interests" for his recent collapse in the polls. But neither of these theories hold water in my opinion. Humphreys is going to lose his bid for U.S. Senator because of his own failings as a mayor and a business man.

Early in Humphreys campaign he stated, "I'm a uniter not a divider." He stole this phrase from President George W. Bush. The problem with Humphries using this slogan is that it doesn't fit him. He is not a "uniter." He is clearly a divider. He pledged not to use negative campaign tactics against his opponents in seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator. His pledge was worthless as he attacked Tom Coburn who has not said one negative word about Humphreys.

Humphreys has shown himself to be an opportunist as a business man and a politician. Orchestrating his "Christian values" in the Billy Graham crusade was self serving at best and deliberately manipulative at worst. The land deals, the Bass Pro debacle, quotes attributed to him that demonstrated his hostility towards small businesses that have been unrefuted. These are a few of a long list of troubles that are associated with Humphreys.

While most Republican primary voters support Humphreys high profile endorsers, they have been able to see these endorsements as a form of Republican political correctness. The Republican establishment has chosen Humphreys. They expected all of us to do the same. The Republican establishment didn't expect the kind of resistance to Humphreys that has been visited on his campaign. Signing on early was supposed to discourage others from getting into the race.

The lesson? Don't try to anoint a candidate in the primary process. Republican voters have become more and more distrustful of this type of tactic. It creates a back lash among the activists who really do make a difference in the primary process. Don't seek to manipulate the process by getting behind a high profile candidate early in hopes of swaying party activists. Let the primary opponents argue and point out the differences between their opponents. Let the best candidate win.

It is clear that Kirk Humphreys is NOT the best candidate.

Brent Rinehart is Best

Brent Rinehart is a rising star in the Republican Party. He has shown himself to be a friend of liberty. He has stood against unconstitutional and improper abuses of government. He will clean up the mismanagement and incompetence that Jack Cornett has visited on the tax payers living in Oklahoma County.
