Calvey Legislation Gives Mixed Signals on Illegal Immigration

In 2003, Oklahoma State House Representative Kevin Calvey-R authored House Bill 1559 which rewards children of illegal aliens with opportunities to have full access to financial aid, grants, and in-state college tuition rates. (70 O.S. § 3242.) In January of 2006, as he was preparing his run for the 5th District U.S. house seat, Calvey must have thought better of his "soft on illegal immigration" reputation as he proposed a new law that would require state employees to report illegal aliens. ( )

Mixed signals.

On the one hand, Calvey wants the children of illegal aliens, who graduate from Oklahoma high schools, to have full access to financial aid, grants and in-state tuition rates. On the other hand, he wants state workers to prevent illegal aliens from working in Oklahoma.
Cognitive dissonance is a condition of conflict or anxiety resulting from inconsistency between one's beliefs and one's actions. Calvey may need to take a pill on this one.
Now that immigration and illegal aliens have become huge issues for the voters, we see that Calvey has had a change of heart. Or has he? Is Calvey attempting to make amends for his past political fopah? Does he really believe it was a mistake? Somehow I doubt it. Calvey cannot have it both ways.

Fundamentally, having more college graduates is a very good thing for Oklahoma. Having more high-skill workers is a great asset. But issues of equity and fairness arise when special accommodation is made for people who are not U.S. citizens. In fact, it is a very good example of badly misaligned incentives.

Imagine the dilemma for an illegal family in Oklahoma. It's against the law for them to be here but if they can successfully slip by the authorities in our state, their children can obtain tax payer paid or assisted college education at very favorable rates.

Club for Growth has endorsed Calvey in the 5th District Republican primary. Perhaps they know which Calvey will show up in Washington D.C. should he be elected. With or without the Club for Growth endorsement, mixed signals will not serve Calvey well as he proceeds with his campaign for Congress.

Perhaps he should plainly tell everyone where he stands on the issue.

Bode Complained of Low Oil Prices in May 2000

Old habits die hard for Denise Bode. As a former lobbyist in the oil and gas industry she was always looking out for the big oil companies. In a May 9, 2000 article titled "Black-Gold Blues Clinton approves oil-price hikes," Bode was not happy about the low oil prices U.S. consumers were enjoying at that time. ( )

In the article written by Charles Smith of WorldNetDaily.com, Bode stated, "In 1997, OPEC acted to consolidate the American market by sending much cheaper oil, dumping it at historically low prices. The most significant energy policy initiated by the Clinton administration is a 4.3 cent increase in the gasoline tax."

Bode also stated, "The OPEC cartel clearly understands that the Clinton energy policy is based on instant gratification, seeking low gasoline prices and ignoring future consequences with a foreign cartel in charge of our national energy resources."

Bode was not happy about the low gas taxes and high unemployment in the oil industry. Bode stated, "Another 30,000 Americans have lost their jobs. Domestic oil production has moved from holding steady to a 5.4 percent decline. Even though OPEC has recently cut back production and raised the price of oil to $30 a barrel, there has been no increase in domestic production." Bode was quite the pessimist.

When oil was priced at $30 a barrel, the U.S. economy was experiencing the longest period of economic expansion in the history of the United States. Inflation was low. The airline industry was growing at a record pace. GM, Ford and Chrysler were selling lots of cars and SUVs as low oil prices spurred American consumers. U.S. stock markets were going bonkers as the Dow topped 11000. But Bode and the oil industry weren't happy about the low price of oil.

I'm quite sure Bode must be overjoyed with the price of oil today. Her campaign will be flush with contributions from oil industry executives who know she will be a dependable politician for the energy industry. As a member of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission she has great influence over oil and gas projects in the State of Oklahoma. An effective member of congress must be focused on more than the desire for high oil prices.

As an active investor in oil companies, I'm very happy about my financial statement these days. But representing Oklahoma in the U.S. Congress involves more than cheerleading the oil and gas industry. I'm not sure Bode has it in her to think outside the barrel.

Oil barrel that is.
