Gundy Confronts Oklahoman Bias and Distortions

After Oklahoma State's football squad had eaked out a victory against Texas Tech's offensive machine, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy confronted Oklahoman writer Jenny Carlson for the “garbage” in her column regarding Bobby Reid, an Oklahoma State quarterback. (Watch the video of the press conference here .)

I have observed the bias from the news section and the sports section regarding the Oklahoma State program in the past but particularly since T-Boone Pickens record contribution. The Oklahoman routinely tilts its perspective in the news in ways that some feel are abusive. But I'm hesitant to place blame solely at Carlson. The news culture today, and particularly at The Oklahoman, is rife with bias. The phrase “fair and balanced” just doesn't apply to one newspaper towns.

Already there are some who are concerned that Gundy's actions on Saturday may lead to a series of negative events for Gundy and the Oklahoma State football program. It would not be the first time a person has taken on the editors of The Oklahoman and found that they don't have enough ink to compete.

Let's not forget the Oklahoma Sooners play in “Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium.”

Chesapeake Earns Windfall Profits on Political Investments

While some have contacted me to ask how I was able to predict the Red Rock decision at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC), it really wasn't that hard to see. Although some of the executives at OG&E thought their proposal would be considered on the merits, they found that they were completely wrong. All they really needed to do was observe the political influence of Chesapeake on Jim Roth-D and Jeff Cloud-R.

The story published by The Oklahoman omitted the fact that it was a 2-1 vote with Bob Anthony voting in support of the $1.9 Billion Red Rock project. The Oklahoman published the story as “ the Oklahoma Corporation Commission voted Monday to reject a proposed $1.87 billion coal-fired power plant near Red Rock.” You had to go to the Tulsa World to discover that Anthony did not agree. Ask yourself why? Answer: They wanted to leave the impression that the rejection was unanimous. Why? I suspect it was to give cover to Roth and Cloud who have received significant support from Chesapeake in terms of political contributions. It just looks bad.

However, Chesapeake did NOTHING wrong in trying to influence the commissioners in a manner most profitable to Chesapeake. In fact, I would say they have an obligation to their shareholders to act in such fashion given the highly regulated aspect of the energy industry.

But those who are elected to protect rate payers have an obligation to do the right thing. Only Bob Anthony voted in the best interests of the rate payers. Bob Anthony's vote in favor of Red Rock was very brave considering the willingness of the natural gas industry to load the bench in favor of natural gas.

Why is it that a non-political judge recommended the Red Rock plant for approval only to have the politicians reject the recommended proposal?

You already know the answer. Don't you.

My friend Ron Black informed me that I mistakenly had attributed former Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Denise Bode as head of the Clean Sky Coalition. She is NOT the head of the Clean Sky Coalition but is head of the American Clean Skies Foundation which was heavily funded and supported by Chesapeake Energy. (See this link for more information.) Both organizations are heavily funded and controlled by Chesapeake Energy.

In the debate over the Red Rock plant, the Sierra Club , which some would cast as a radical environmental organization, joined Bode's fight in fending off the OG&E/PSO Red Rock power plant proposal. In fact, the Sierra Club was a prominent participant in the advertising campaign against the Red Rock power plant.
