Ron Paul Exposes Fox News and the Republican Establishment
When Fox News excluded Ron Paul from the New Hampshire debates, Fox delivered a blow to its own credibility as a network that is supposed to be "fair and balanced." That moniker has been a form of branding that helped propel the network to dominance in its cable news category. Prior to the Ron Paul treatment, most of the vociferous doubters were typically Democrats and other liberal ideologues. Now that’s all changed.
For the first time, I now hear those who are conservative heavily criticizing Fox News as nothing more than a mouthpiece for the neoconservative, war mongering, tax and spend, corporate welfare promoting establishment. This is a step in the right direction.
Sean Hannity’s bias is probably the most egregious. While it is very clear that he is a purveyor of opinion and not news, his methodology is more akin to an artful propagandist. He holds great pride in "Hannitizing" his audience and manipulating opinion with a heavy hand.
In the recent South Carolina debate, Ron Paul was asked questions that were just ridiculous and beneath the dignity of the event by Fox News hosts. The bias at Fox News is obvious and just as reprehensible as the bias found in the mainstream media.
Paul has also further exposed Republicans as the party of big government, and whose leaders have abdicated the principles of Ronald Reagan. Republicans have been properly cast as the "borrow and spend" party with an antipathy for the Constitution. I let out an internal chuckle every time I hear someone like Hannity argue for a limited, constitutional government and freedom. He doesn’t mean it and I wonder if Republican leaders even know what freedom is today.
The Republican Party is too fragmented to win in November. There is no one candidate that can capture the support of libertarian/economic conservatives, social conservatives, and neoconservatives. Worse than this, these political coalitions seem to be warring with each other over policy. Unless Ronald Reagan rises from the dead to save the Republicans in ’08, Democrats will win back the White House.
If Giuliani or Romney is the Republican nominee, there is a legitimate chance that Oklahoma could go Democrat in ’08 for the first time since 1964, (if Hillary isn’t the nominee) as listless Republicans stay home. Giuliani’s record on abortion and gun rights will likely make him an undesirable candidate while Romney’s mixed and confused record on conservative issues makes him too slick to trust.
John McCain, despite the fact that he has received the endorsement of Tom Coburn, is hostile to free political speech. He has failed to support tax cuts in the recent past and has been quick to embrace a big government mentality.
Mike Huckabee is little more than a Jimmy Carter Republican. That is to say, he’s socially conservative and fiscally liberal. Huckabee seems to wear his religion on his sleeve for all to see. I have too much difficulty seeing past his flagrant manipulation of mainstream protestant voters to see a worthwhile candidate. Huckabee’s pious, religious orientation just turns me completely off.
Meanwhile, I hope Ron Paul will push forward with his pro-constitution, pro-freedom campaign into a third party bid after he finishes his run in the Republican Party. While many in the Republican Party do not appreciate Paul’s perspective on constitutional governance and freedom, it is important that people have the opportunity to vote for a candidate rather than for the lesser of two evils.
That’s how I see it.
