KFOR Selects Humphreys as Replacement for Hargis on Flash Point
KFOR officially announced on Sunday’s Flash Point program that former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys will replace Burns Hargis on its successful Sunday morning political show. The partisan Republican role played by Hargis on Flash Point had to be diminished as he will soon take over as president of Oklahoma State University.
KFOR’s selection of Humphreys demonstrates a commitment to enhance the political influence and agenda of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, which is increasingly offensive to conservative Republicans.
It is clear that KFOR did not look for a limited government, conservative Republican. They wanted a "pro-pork, pro-earmark" Republican who could advocate as a radical moderate, and from a corporate welfare perspective. I would argue that no candidate fits that model better than Kirk Humphreys.
You might recall that Humphreys was anointed in 2004 with the endorsements of J.C. Watts, Jim Inhofe, Don Nickles, and the national Republican Party establishment in his failed campaign for U.S. Senator. Oklahoma conservatives rallied behind Tom Coburn who was heavily outspent in the primary.
Outside of tort reform, I suspect Mike Turpen and Kirk Humphreys are mostly on the same page when it comes to issues. Perhaps they can manufacture some areas of disagreement on the program. Perhaps not.
KFOR blew a great opportunity to put a real, limited government, conservative Republican on the program. But I’m sure they got exactly what they wanted with Humphreys. It’s apparent the last thing KFOR wanted was real debate and controversy.
Perhaps they can change the name of the show to "Frostbite."

Oklahoma County Republican Convention News
If the Oklahoma County Republican Convention is an accurate indicator, it appears that Ron Paul supporters may become a rather large factor in the direction of the Oklahoma State Republican Party.
Though Ron Paul only received 4% of the vote in Oklahoma, his supporters are not standing down. The Oklahoma County platform represents a fresh direction and reflects some of the themes trumpeted by Ron Paul in his presidential campaign. In fact, some of the delegates were so unhappy with the platform that a motion to reject it was made from the floor. The motion to reject the platform was soundly defeated and the platform was approved as submitted by roughly two-thirds of the delegates.
A looming issue at the convention was last fall’s news of campaign finance problems associated with the so-called "Victory Fund" of 2004 and 2006. I attempted to discuss the issue at the convention under the convention rules but was thwarted by a quorum motion at the end of the convention. My strongly held opinion is that the rules were shrewdly exploited to prevent discussion of the issue. See full story at http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070930_1_A21_hTheO11725
I have been assured by the current chairman that I will have the opportunity to address this issue with the Oklahoma County Executive Committee. I have asked for a meeting within the next 45 days. It is my desire for the Oklahoma County Republican Party to fully disclose what occurred in 2004 and 2006 after the Oklahoma Ethics Commission has completed their investigation of the Oklahoma County Republican Party. Let me stress that the current chairman was not involved with those activities in 2004 and 2006.
I feel that it is extremely important for transparency and accountability to exist in the county party. We should not seek to hide what occurred, right or wrong. Republicans often accuse Democrats of covering up wrongdoing. If the activities that occurred in Victory Fund 2004 by the Oklahoma County Republican Party were legal, we should be made aware of such a finding. If not we should NOT try to hide from it. The funds in question reportedly totaled $48,000.
My specific questions are as follows:
1 – How did monies intended for the Oklahoma State Republican Party end up in the Oklahoma County Republican Party?
2 – Who directed the money?
3 – Who received the money?
4 – Which candidates received benefit from the money?
These questions much be addressed. It is hypocritical and improper for Oklahoma County Republican activists to insist on transparency and accountability in government while avoiding transparency in how monies were expended in 2004 and 2006. While such disclosure may be uncomfortable, it is very necessary and will show that we will deal with such issues openly.
I will keep you informed.
