Sandy Garrett's Missing Credentials
S andy Garrett has had three chances to answer an open records request as to when she first became certified as a Superintendent. Garrett has yet to answer the question. Rumors have been swirling that she did not have the proper credentials when she first took office and that she "arranged" her credentials when she had the power to do so as State Superintendent. While these charges have not been proven by anyone, three separate attempts to view her records have not been able to dispel the rumors.
An August 2002 open records request regarding Garrett's dates of certification was not answered with complete information. The information requested was for Garrett's certifications. Garrett's office took several weeks to produce the information. The information provided listed her degrees but not the dates.
On October 29, 2002, I requested the dates of her certifications. After a 40-minute wait to simply view the documents, once again, I received incomplete information. I asked to view Garrett's original Superintendents certification. I was told that the information I wanted "was in the archives" and that I could view the items once they were located.
Later in the afternoon on October 29 th , I received a call stating the information I requested was at the front office desk in an envelope. Once again, the information wasn't what I asked to see. I was given her first teaching certification, not her first Superintendents certification as I had requested. After three attempts to get this information, it is clear to me that Garrett doesn't want to answer the question. Giving me the wrong information three consecutive times is proof enough.
As I write this story, Garrett is desperately engaging the politics of personal destruction in her television ads attacking Lloyd Roettger. All it seems she can do is cast aspersions upon his character. Rather than answer the questions being asked, Garrett is hiding from the truth. She has refused to debate Roettger in person. Garrett has shown herself to be a coward. Only one question remains. Will the voters elect her to office once again? Her handling of my records request has been deviously deceptive to the point where the whole situation stinks to high heaven.
If Largent wins and Roettger loses, it will prove that the Oklahoma Republicans are all talk when it comes to education. Blaming the Democrats for education troubles might be good politics for Republicans in the short run. But doing nothing to reform education is an act of cynicism.
Returning Garrett to the State Superintendents Office will prove that our children are mere pawns in a political blame game.

Political Ads
P
olitical ads are designed to bring forward the differences between candidates running for public office. But what I see in this years political ads is mostly similarities. Every television ad shows the candidate in scenes with children, dogs, cats and old people. Even the negative TV ads are the same. Have you noticed? Almost every negative ad gives the phone number of the candidate being attacked telling the viewer to call the candidate and set them straight. Maybe I've just missed this in the past. But it seems much more prevalent this year. Also, every negative ad seems to cast doubts on the opposing candidate having Oklahoma values. (Whatever that means.)
Radio ads have started to sound similar as well. But it seems that most of the radio ads are attack ads. The best political ad I've heard on radio is Democrat Doug Dodd's ad in Tulsa. Dodd is running for the 1
st
Congressional District against incumbent Republican John Sullivan. In his own voice, Dodd calmly lays out his case against John Sullivan. It is a negative ad filled with political distortions. But unlike other Democrat candidates, Dodd isn't saying that electing a Republican will cause black churches to burn, the elderly to lose their social security or that little children will be made to starve. Dodd's use of the line, "and that's a fact," is good form. Before you get crazy angry with me, I'm a strong Sullivan supporter. I just like the way the ad was put together. "And that's a fact."
Under the missed opportunities column is Denise Bode's ad against Drew Edmondson where she attacks him for his stance in siding with homosexual activists in a legal battle with the Boy Scouts. The attack kind of fades away in a mix-mash of charges. It's extremely weak. What should have been shown was a gay parade in San Francisco with all the perversion shown on one side of the screen with a boy scout on the other side. The line would go, "Only one candidate running for Attorney General wants to force the Boy Scouts to accept homosexual activists to serve as Boy Scout troop leaders. Only one candidate filed a court brief fighting the Boy Scouts attempt to exclude homosexual activists. Only one candidate has accepted contributions from homosexual political action groups. If you support the homosexual agenda, vote for Drew Edmondson. If not, vote Denise Bode for Oklahoma Attorney General."
The worst ad to run is a tie. Gary Richardson's "Yes we can!" ad is a really bad ad. Maybe I've just heard it too many times. Another REALLY BAD ad is the McMahan ad jingle using Sammy Davis Jr's "The Candy Man" song. It's like running fingernails on a chalkboard while someone hammers nails into your head. I've always hated that song.
The most mean spirited ad? The winner is Sandy Garrett. Her TV ad attacking Lloyd Roettger is the most destructive, mean spirited attack ad I've ever seen. It's amazing to think that she has been the overseer of our children's education. She obviously feels threatened by his candidacy and has used the James Carville book of hate in an attempt to destroy Roettger. Congratulations Sandy! After all these years in leading Oklahoma to dead last in most educational categories, you're finally number one in something.

The UCO Gubernatorial Forum
A
ll three gubernatorial candidates squared off at a UCO forum Friday, November 01, 2002 to discuss the important issues of the voters. The audience was a "red meat" gathering for each of the candidates at the forum. Each of the candidates delivered their familiar and consistent messages.
But Democrat Brad Henry seemed to be completely overwhelmed and outmatched. Once he was thrown off message by one of his own supporters when she couldn't seem to read the question she had written on a card. It strikes me that someone else wrote the question for her. She obviously graduated from an Oklahoma school under the tutelage of Sandy Garrett. I have two words of advice for Henry. Lloyd Roettger. The next time you plant a question for yourself at a forum, you might want to find a Democrat that successfully completed one of Roettger's classes at UCO. Using one of Sandy Garrett's graduates is just political suicide.
Richardson and Largent put on a great performance. Both answered the questions head on. Both delivered their consistent message throughout the forum. Both brought a huge number of supporters. Henry had the least vocal group of supporters.
Ranking them by their performance. Largent performed the best. Very polished and poised. Richardson came in 2 nd . Polished and poised as well but not to the level of Largent. And poor Brad Henry came in dead last. He is Oklahoma's version of Al Gore. Stiff at times and not very comfortable on stage. Democrats should have elected Orza in the primary. They would have had a better chance with Orza as their candidate.
Oh well.

The State Questions and Recommendations
State Question 687- Vote NO! I can't support a bill that elevates chickens above humans. A dead chicken shouldn't result in a felony conviction for anyone.
Under the proposed measure;
1. "It is a felony to instigate or encourage cockfighting."
2. "It is a felony to keep places, equipment or facilities for cockfighting."
3. "It is a felony to aid or assist in cockfighting."
4. "It is a felony to own, possess, keep or train birds for cockfighting."

A Fed Up Conservative
As far as J.M. says on the abortion issue I would ask - What the Hell has any of these Tony Lauinger clones done to prevent abortion? I am sick to death (pardon the pun) of being told I have to vote for some nobody because they are Pro-Life. Is Denise Bode Pro-Life? Not really, it just gets her votes and that's all that matters. They USE US and I won't be used any longer.
