"The Right stands for liberty, a free, unprejudiced form of thinking; a readiness to preserve traditional values (provided they are true values); a balanced view of the nature of man, seeing in him neither beast nor angel, insisting on the uniqueness of human beings which cannot be transformed into or treated as mere numbers or ciphers. The Left is the advocate of the opposite principles; it is the enemy of diversity and the fanatical promoter of identity. Uniformity is stressed in all leftist utopias, paradises in which everybody is the same, envy is dead, and the enemy is either dead, lives outside the gates, or is utterly humiliated. Leftism loathes differences, deviations, stratifications. The only hierarchy it can accept is functional. The word "one" is its symbol: one language, one race, one class, one ideology, one ritual, one type of school, one law for everybody, one flag, one coat of arms, one centralized world state. Leftism is horizontal and collectivist, Rightism is vertical and personalist."

Brenda Reneau Wynn, Pat McGuigan & Cronyism
"Brenda Reneau Wynn is the best and most conservative statewide elected (non-federal) official in Oklahoma's modern political history."
Patrick McGuigan August 13, 2002-
www.brendareneauwynn.com/press releases/pr081302.htm
I once said that Brenda Reneau Wynn was the most genuine politician I had ever met. Boy was I fooled. According to the Tulsa World, Patrick McGuigan, a former editorial page editor was hired Feb.18, 2003, to be a media specialist for the Oklahoma Labor Department.
Many may recall that McGuigan quickly resigned last summer after having sent out a controversial letter to State House Republicans that many saw as campaign literature. The letter was crafted using Oklahoman stationary, envelopes, and postage. Many critics said that it constituted an in-kind contribution to the Reneau Wynn campaign and may have constituted an illegal contribution since it came from a corporation. At the time of his resignation, a KTOK story reported that Reneau Wynn said that McGuigan was doing what editorial writers do - give their opinions and ask others for theirs.
But McGuigan's letter clearly went beyond a simple request for opinions. When the letter was made public and just days before McGuigan's resignation, Tim Pope (her primary opponent) received a phone call from Oklahoman publisher Edward L. Gaylord apologizing for the incident.
McGuigan's appreciation of Reneau Wynn continued after his resignation as he took on editorial assignments for Tulsa Today, a web based news site. (
www.TulsaToday.com
He even compared her to former president Ronald Reagan. McGuigan is certainly entitled to his honest opinion, but what went on at the Oklahoman wasn't fair and above board. And he often used the editorial page to pump up other politicians whose conservative values, at the very least, are less than sterling. Politicians like Democrats Sandy Garrett and Laura Boyd were editorial page favorites of his. (Maybe it was a "Gal Thing" after all.)
Though not to a significant extent, McGuigan's behavior on behalf of Reneau Wynn appears to have been rewarded. One would expect this sort of thing from the likes of Gene Stipe. I am shocked at the lack of outrage when a Republican engages in similar behavior. (At least he's not a ghost employee.) Regardless, using the tax payers money to reward favoritism is tax payer abuse.
What once looked like a shining political career where Reneau Wynn challenged "Union Goons" in the federal Davis-Bacon case where she personally dealt with "thuggery and intimidation" has now degraded into acts of cronyism and government waste. At a time when the State of Oklahoma is trying to deal with budget short falls, Reneau Wynn is padding her staff with unnecessary frills. I guess some people can justify Republican waste.
I can't.

Oklahoma County Republican Convention
Oklahoma County Republicans met March 22, 2003, and elected new officers and officials. Al Mertens is the new Oklahoma County Chairman and Marlena Do is the new Vice Chair. Both Mertens and Do are racial minorities showing, once again, that minorities are more than welcome in the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is all talk when it comes to giving leadership positions to racial minorities. Tom Dudley and Carissa Darling were voted State Committee Man and Woman.
Lt. Governor Mary Fallin was the keynote speaker. One theme that kept coming through was "common sense." In fact, State House Representative Lance Cargill said, "We need a common sense revolution at 23rd and Lincoln." I think this concept should be used as a campaign theme in the 2004 election cycle. Most Republicans are for cutting the budgets in time of budget shortfalls while most Democrats are for introducing new taxes and silly lotteries.
A proposed amendment to State Republican rules regarding ending Oklahoma's "Super Tuesday" presidential preference primary was defeated. Speaking for the amendment was Richard Engle and against was outgoing County Chairman Steve Curry. Both were very articulate in explaining their positions. And those in attendance didn't want much discussion of the issue as they voted to limit the discussion to 4 minutes for each side without rebuttal.
I support the proposed amendment for a number of reasons. But most important to me is the fact that slick advertising campaigns are less effective in manipulating votes among informed activists. This is a most important issue regarding the selection of Republican Party candidates. Activists tend to hold candidates more accountable than people who aren't as aware as perhaps they need to be of a candidate's past voting record or past behavior.
This issue will not go away.
