Istook Punts - Should Keating Be Drafted?

"The hardest thing in life to learn is which bridge to cross and which to burn."
- David Russell

Istook took himself out of the senate race on Sunday. Reading between the lines, the power structure within the Republican Party sent Istook a clear signal that his candidacy was not welcome. Don Nickles, Jim Inhofe and the Republican establishment sent him a clear message. Which went something like this;

"Gee Earnest, we really think you're doing an outstanding job in the House. We'd really rather you stay right where you are. You're much more valuable in the House than you would be in the Senate. Besides, we really think that Kirk Humphreys would be a great addition to the Senate. And he's really got the financial resources to run a successful campaign for U.S. Senate. And really Earnest, if both Nickles and Inhofe decide to support Humphreys do you really think you'd have a chance to win? You've done a great job in the house but we don't believe you would be able to compete in the primary if we throw our support to Humphreys. Your fundraising ability might come up short. Heck it might even cause you to lose your house seat. Now you wouldn't want that to happen would you?"

The picture is pretty clear. Oh I know he said that his candidacy "would discourage other candidates and make it harder to find ... a strong, viable candidate." But for him to suddenly shift gears when he's been indicating publicly his desire to replace Nickles is more than simply a change of heart. No I believe there's some "anointing" going on.

Since Humphreys completed Oklahoma City's socialized retail welfare initiative, i.e. Bass Pro, where he used millions of the taxpayer's dollars to enrich a few downtown property owners and the stockholders of Bass Pro Inc., he has made the concerted effort to promote his conservatism.

Heck he even gave his testimony at the Billy Graham crusade. I guess I now know what Jesus meant when he said;
"And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full." Mathew Ch 6 vs 5.

Humphreys actually uses the word limited government in promoting his ideas and candidacy for higher office. He even used the words in front of activists at the State Republican Convention earlier this year. Humphries has shown that he supports the expansion of government and even supports the Patriot Act.

The Patriot Act is a gargantuan intrusive act. Not necessarily for what it has done but for what it empowers government bureaucrats to do. Even Ashcroft was against these intrusive powers when they were proposed by the Clinton Administration.

Humphreys says that he's a conservative. The Daily Oklahoman quotes Humphries saying his views are the same as Inhofes, "whether it's limiting the size of government or trying to build a strong private sector." Well for whatever "conservatism" means in the modern era perhaps Humphries is indeed a conservative. But in no way is Humphries a constitutionalist.

Just because Humphries is a registered Republican isn't reason enough to support him based on his record as Mayor of Oklahoma City. Is Keating a better alternative? Would he accept a draft? Would you support him if he decided to run?

Surely there's a better alternative to Humphries.
