Ron Paul: Why YOU Should Support Him

I don't agree with Ron Paul's plan to immediately withdraw US troops from Iraq or his proposed “gold standard” monetary system. But I see Ron Paul as the only candidate committed to limited government conservatism and the restoration of constitutional freedoms. Thankfully, I'm not alone.

The most recent fundraising reports for the third quarter show that Ron Paul can financially compete with those candidates considered to be in the top tier. Paul raised over $5 million in the last fundraising quarter which put him $4+ million ahead of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Make no mistake, Paul's fundraising success will provide him with an opportunity to spread his message of freedom and liberty.

Another Ron Paul advantage is the high level of commitment from grass roots activists who have enthusiastically embraced his candidacy. $5 million for Paul spends like $10 million for the other “mainstream” Republican candidates, who retain large, costly campaign payrolls and expensive political consultants. Paul's campaign staff is largely a volunteer staff. Now, let that burn in for a moment.

Ron Paul is the ONLY Republican candidate that has consistently fought (has an actual record) for and promoted a federal government based on constitutional principles. He is the only candidate that promises to end the imperial ambitions of the neo-conservatives and other socialist activists who seek to spread US influence by force. He is the only candidate that has specified how to reduce the size of the federal government. He is the only candidate that wants to end the abusive effects of the so-called “Patriot Act.” He is the only candidate that understands the fundamental, core problem with the economic structure of healthcare. He is the only candidate that understands the illegitimacy of the United Nations. He is the only candidate that understands the danger central planning poses to free markets. He is the only candidate that understands the absolute necessity of free trade. He is the only candidate willing to curtail the police state mentality that permeates all levels of government. I could go on and on but I won't.

The bottom line is that Ron Paul is objectionable for some in the Republican Party because of his stance on the war in Iraq. The threats from Al-Qaeda and other terrorists pale by comparison to the real danger of lost constitutional liberties and freedom so willingly exchanged by some of the American people for supposed safety and security.

There are a few who justify the war in Iraq as a curtailment to radical Islam. They argue that IF we leave Iraq, Islamists (even those considered moderate Muslims) will embrace violence against Christian nations. This is not the year 711 AD, when Muslim marauders conquered Spain. We now have the ability to annihilate the planet. While I prefer an accelerated withdraw over five years to Paul's immediate withdraw, there is no real challenge to American power or sovereignty that is not freely given by us through our democratic processes. And when will it stop being the responsibility of the American taxpayer to stop protecting the world? When will we have our tax burden reduced or lifted?

IF you really want to move this country away from that of a socialist, centrally planned, police state mentality ( the US is number 1 in incarceration per capita ) with imperial ambitions, Ron Paul is the ONLY answer. He is the only candidate that has actually proposed specific departmental cuts within the federal government. He is the only candidate that walks to the talk. He is the only candidate willing to push the ideals of our constitution. He is the only candidate worthy of support from those who refer to themselves as “conservative.” There is no candidate more “conservative” than Paul.

It's time for conservatives to match actions with words. It's gut check time. It's time for conservatives to focus on principle first and perceived electability second. What has been won if the politicians we elect have no intention of governing as limited government conservatives? It's these kinds of Republican politicians that have caused the current meltdown of disunity in the Republican Party today. No longer is there a “guiding principle” that unites Republicans. The national Republican Party has swapped principle for power. Activists (myself included) have at times settled, foolishly, for an “R” rather than a “D” with the misguided belief that it was the “lesser of two evils.”

While we should never demand ideological purity from people running for political office, we should expect a candidate have some basic level of belief in the limited government precepts found in the US Constitution. No person currently running for president in either party exceeds Ron Paul on this simple test. Ron Paul is the best. Period.

Recently, at an Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee (OCPAC) lunch meeting, I asked Congresswoman Mary Fallin why conservatives should continue to believe that the national Republican Party is still committed to the philosophy of a limited federal government. She answered that the congress lost its “mojo” and needed to get it back. I was unimpressed with her response. Republicans in office need to spend more time, a large quantity of time, brainstorming the implications of that question.

The time for half-measures, empty rhetoric, false promises, and outright deceit is over. Personally?....I liked the Republican Party more when it was in minority status. Perhaps national Republican leaders need some extended time in that capacity to find their way again?
